Supplies Needed:-Fabric place mat that has 2 pieces of fabric sewn together – Safety pin or Seam Ripper-Pillow Stuffing ( you can reuse the stuffing material from an old pillow) – Matching Thread and Sewing Needle or Fabric glue or Stitch Witchery and iron (depends on how you want to close the hole)
Step One:You will need a placemat that has two pieces of fabric sewn together. Either reuse one you already have, or you can find one at a thrift store. I bought this one for $2 on clearance.
Step Two:Using a safety pin or a seam ripper to pull threads. Start about an inch or so from a corner. Be careful. The more you tear out the more you have to re-sew. I usually pull out an 1 1/2 -2inch long slit. Just enough to fit stuffing into.
Step Three:Start with stuffing all four corners first. Makes sure to shove it in the corner with your finger. Fill the pillow tight with stuffing. Keep Smashing it down to avoid dimpling in the pillow. Once you have it filled to your liking…..
Step Four:Time to close the hole. You can hand sew it using matching thread, or You could use Stitch Witchery and iron it closed or You could use fabric glue and hold it closed with a clamp until it is dry. And Viola you are done!!!

I never thought of doing this. Great idea!!!!
I did this years ago when decorating my living room. I purchased 2 packs of table settings in complimentary colors that each came with 4 place mats, 4 napkins, 4 napkin rings, and 4 sets of chop sticks. They were only about $8 a pack at Home Goods. I made 2 pillows in each color. 2 I left as rectangles, and I folded over the border that ran along one side and made 2 square pillows. I used one remaining place mat under the centerpiece on my large, square coffee table, and I used the napkins to make valences for my 2 living room windows. (I was even able to bundle all of the chopsticks with one of the napkin rings to keep them contained in the silverware drawer.) I kept the remaining place mats and napkins tucked away in case anything became ripped or stained and needed replacing. Nobody ever realized how I had decorated until I told them, and even then, they'd have to examine the pillows themselves! And I did it all for less than the price of one throw pillow, including stuffing and thread.
Hello Jennifer! Found you at Monday Saving Mom. Great idea!
I am a new blogger that also blogs about healthy deals. It is great to see your site and how you do things. I love the Trader Joe's match ups; I hadn't seen that before. Keep up the good work!
I've done this and it turned out really cute! You can also sew 2 separate placemats together. I've also made pillows with 2 napkins sewn together, leaving the decorative edging on the outside. Thinking outside the lines gives you so many options!
Great idea! Thank you!
This is a super cute idea!! I will definintely have to try it!! Thanks!
I did the same thing in my living room! Love them!! I also used cloth napkins!
